Proof that the Irish Croston Families were from Lancashire, England

This week test results from J.Croston, a man with ancestral origins in Lancashire, England matched my father (tester R.Croston) with ancestral origins in Schull, Cork, Ireland. This is very exciting for those of us with Irish roots!

The test is called the Big-Y DNA test. It is the highest level test that a male can take. It traces a mans father's father's father into ancient times and it is very detailed.

Several Croston men have taken the 12, 25 or 37 marker test over the past few years. This has allowed us to confirm who is related through closer Croston lines.

J. Croston had previously matched another man with Lancashire origins (tester A. Croston).
These 2 men are more closely related to each other than to the Irish families.

2 other Croston families have been identified over the past year or so. Although the 3 families are not related through the same paternal Croston family, it is possible they may be related through a son that was born to a single woman who passed on her Croston surname. Or they may not be related at all and more than one family took the name.

Hopefully in the future more families will test and we can fill in the gaps.

Below you will see a chart explaining how the families do or do not relate.

Croston Family 1:
Descendants of Gustavus Travis Croston

Croston Family 2:
Some research has been done by others who link this family to the marriage of Thomas Croston and Jane Caddell. Others also link them to the larger family that lived in Ormskirk and Maghull, Lancashire back into the 1500's. I am not 100% convinced of the connection because there are some holes in the paper trail.

More testing would be helpful to confirm relationships within this area. In the following map the origin of this family group is highlighted in Orange.

Croston Family 3:
Some researchers link this family to the area east of the village of Croston as well as Croston itself. I need to do more research to confirm or disprove this myself.

The Crostons of Ireland are more distantly related to J. Croston and A. Croston. However the match is unique enough to be certain they are all the same Croston family.  More research is needed to learn where exactly the Irish family came from- but this is a great starting point. The area where this family lived is highlighted in green on the map. The yellow highlighted areas show where J. Croston and A. Crostons families lived.

A big thank you to all of you who have tested. This type of information could not come from parish registers or census records.
